TOP 10 Signs You are a “True” Body Talk Member 16

Dancer's Edge

Dancer's Edge is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to the Art of Dance with the goal of providing dance education.  The mission is to provide all students regardless of ethnic or economic background the opportunity to receive the training necessary to dance professionally.  The organization has been in existence since July 1994 and has provided dance training and performance opportunities for hundreds of kids.  As an umbrella organization, Dancer's Edge sponsors Body Talk Dance Company.  It also sponsors the State of the Art Dance Conventions, the Make a Difference Hip Hop classes, and supports a multitude of others.  Joyce Willett School of Dance (JWSD) is not affiliated with Dancer’s Edge.  JWSD contributes rehearsal space.

Website

Our website www.dancersedge.org is the best place to stay abreast of company activities.

Simply access the Body Talk Dance Co link on the main page and go to the Company Only page.  The latest and greatest, not to mention, the most important information is on the Hot Hot News Page.

Email

All information is sent to members who give an email address at registration.  This includes all administrative activities, hotline, and newsletter information, as well as, a direct means of communicating to the Artistic Director.

Folders/Cubbies

Dancers should check their folders in the break room at the Windsor studio before or after class and rehearsal times to ensure they receive all pertinent information.  Dancers are all assigned cubbies to keep their personal belongings.  Costumes are often issued through these cubbies.

Pledge Amount

The pledge amount is the amount of money you are donating to the operation of Dancer's Edge.  This money primarily pays the faculty for the time spent in rehearsal.  The pledge system is an attempt to provide dance opportunities with Body Talk Dance Co. at a minimal cost to the participant. Pledges are tax-deductible.  These pledges should be made out to Dancer’s Edge.

Preps are expected to pledge $45.00 a month and regular members $60.00 a month from September through June (10 payments).  (Dancers will no longer pay pledge amounts during the summer months of July and August.)

If we do not receive the needed amount, we will charge tuition the following year and the members will lose the tax-deduction.  This would also hurt us as far as grants are concerned as we need to show community support of our program in the form of donations.  Until we obtain a steady stream of outside funding, the pledge system will allow us to have at least a foundation of funds from which to operate for the subsequent year.

Finance

All checks affiliated with Body Talk Dance Company are to be made payable to Dancer’s Edge, including costume fees.  Do NOT make Dancer's Edge payments to JWSD as they are not the same thing.  Those who dance at JWSD need to make tuition payments to JWSD.

Ms. Kim prefers the Windsor JWSD tuition payments and the Dancer’s Edge pledge payments be directly mailed to her home address:  6609 Corpus Christie Drive, Austin, Texas 78729.

Payments may also be made at the Windsor studio.  You or your dancer can place payments in the finance folder located in the metal file cabinet in the break room or the payment slot in the lobby.  Teach your dancer where the finance folder is.

No matter what the money is intended for, all deposits will first go toward any outstanding balance in the dancer's name.  Pledge money, costume deposits, convention and competition tuition and any monies collected by Dancer’s Edge are non refundable.

Dancers are always welcome to pay ahead into their account.  However, once all the money is put in the dancer’s account, it can only go to pay for Dancer's Edge expenses.  No money will be credited back for dancers who drop company mid year etc.

Reimbursements

Reimbursements must be pre-approved or they will not be re-paid to you.  Receipts must be submitted in an envelope marked with your name, the total amount due, and what it is for.  The envelopes need to be placed into the FUNDRAISING folder.  If the reimbursement is for costume related items, please indicate which show.  Do not expect a quick turnaround.  Ms. Kim will get checks back out as soon as she can; however, it is unrealistic to expect anything within a couple of days.  The next Saturday rehearsal is probably the earliest you can expect.

Email the Artistic Director, Ms. Kim (kwillett@austin.rr.com), to let her know you have put in receipts.

Please send in your receipts in a timely manner.  Don’t wait!  If you wait too long, you will not be reimbursed as the books must be closed out for each show.  We will not function as a savings account for your dancer.  For example, all the receipts for the Christmas performances must be submitted before we break for the Holidays.  It cannot be expected to be reimbursed for these expenses in March to help with spring convention/competition expenses.

Attendance Policy

Body Talk Dancers must get the required classes at JWSD. Dancers must attend 75% of the required classes.  Dancers will not audition or register for conventions (other than the required State of the Art) without the 75% attendance.  This can also affect their ability to do solos, duos, or trios or perform with the company.  Dancers should make up all classes.  Make up classes must be made up in other tech classes for ballet, tap, or jazz.  Tech 2.5 and 3 dancers (Preps) are the exception to this rule and may make up in regular level classes if they wish.  If a dancer makes up a missed class in a regular class, please send an email to the Artistic Director in order for it to be recorded.  An Attendance Log will be emailed on a regular basis.

Absences

Although all rehearsals are not mandatory, it is important to limit absences as much as possible.  It is required to inform the Artistic Director, in writing, of all absences both from rehearsal and tech classes.  Notice does not ensure that the absence will be excused.  All classes should be made up. Unexpected absence notice may be given via voicemail.  (Note, Ms. Kim does not answer her phone during class time.)

Commitments

Commitments will be accepted on a limited/emergency basis.  All dancers are expected to be at ALL rehearsals.  If the schedule is published and a dancer cannot attend, they may be cut from the dance.  This will be at the Artistic Director’s discretion.

The Artistic Director will no longer try to accommodate the commitment and adjust the rehearsal schedule.  Dancers may request for an excused absence.  However, to avoid being cut, they must receive a written approval from the Artistic Director.  Please limit these requests for absences for commitments of the utmost importance.  Please note dancers who have to miss crucial rehearsals or who miss an excessive amount of rehearsals will not be allowed to perform.

Please inform the Artistic Director of any important dates in writing, even if they do not appear to conflict with the standard schedule.

Also note, the Artistic Director must be informed of any extra-curricular activities in which the dancer is enrolled.  The level of absence tolerated will be at the discretion of the Artistic Director.

Food Rules for ALL Dancers

A dancer must be in excellent physical condition in order to excel in his/her profession.  It is the Artistic Director’s goal to train young dancers to eat in a manner that will enable them to excel.

Performances

Our dancers perform all over Austin and Central Texas.  We are often hired as a professional performing company by Esther’s Follies, private parties held at places like Old Pecan Street Cafe, as well as, providing entertainment for conventions held in Austin.

A “closed” performance is when we are hired to entertain audiences. Dancers are generally carpooled to these events.  Parents, friends and relatives do not attend closed performances unless they are involved with the private entity that hired our company.

Relatives are welcome to attend "Open" performances.  Ticketed performances are generally "First come first serve" seating.  Videotaping and flash pictures are not allowed.

Community performances are also "open" performances, but they are for the community and parents should not take the best seats. Please let the public see our dancers.  If videotaping or non flash photography is allowed, it should be done discreetly and kept to a minimum.

Competitions should not be viewed as a performance.  The dancer attends in order to be adjudicated.  They should not be distracted by a huge group of supporters.  Any family members who break the rules will be dealt with severely.  Make sure the family members you include will follow the rules of etiquette.

In addition to community performances, we will have the 3 major performances this year as well as perform at the JWSD December and June recitals.  Please refer to the tentative dates below:

  • December 13th, 2008 – JWSD December Recital – Westwood High School
  • December 14th, 2008 – Pure Imagination –
